Staff Attorney - Domestic Violence Advocacy Project
New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) seeks a Domestic Violence Advocacy Project(DVAP) Staff Attorney based in our Claremont office. We are open to a hybrid work arrangement. We are eager to fill this position before the end of July 2023.
NHLA is a statewide organization and the DVAP Staff Attorney will be responsible for providing DVAP legal services under NHLA’s Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) grant initiative, an interdisciplinary project with WISE, which provides crisis services to and advocates for victims/survivors of gender-based violence in New Hampshire’s Upper Valley region. The LAV grant initiative focuses on serving victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking who experience mental illness and/or have a history of substance misuse. Clients receive a holistic array of services from both WISE and NHLA.
The DVAP Staff Attorney will provide holistic and trauma-informed representation to victims/survivors referred by WISE. Representation focuses primarily on divorce and parenting matters, but can include other related civil legal issues. The DVAP Staff Attorney will work closely with WISE staff members, including providing consultation and training around legal issues. The DVAP staff attorney will also be responsible for community engagement and education in the WISE service area, including building partnerships with culturally specific community groups, courts, and police departments.
Applications will be accepted until June 20, 2023. Please send your resume with a cover email summarizing your interest in the position and your qualifications to: officemanager@nhla.org. A separate cover letter is not required in addition to the cover email. We strongly encourage you to apply via email rather than using a third-party application service. Please see full posting here.
Paralegal Advocate – Domestic Violence Advocacy Project
NHLA seeks 2 full-time Paralegal Advocates for our Domestic Violence Advocacy Project (DVAP). One position is based in NHLA’s Claremont office and one position is based in NHLA’s Berlin office. NHLA offers comprehensive training for new Paralegal Advocates. With NHLA attorney supervision and as part of a vibrant DVAP team, Paralegal Advocates will assist low-income and older (age 60 and over) clients who are victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. This civil legal work focuses on protective order and family law cases.
The State of New Hampshire is currently operating a pilot project authorizing non-attorney paraprofessionals to represent clients in court in certain circumstances. Depending on qualifications and following training, the Berlin and Claremont Paralegal Advocates may be eligible to participate in the pilot project. Extensive travel throughout New Hampshire is a requirement of both positions (mileage reimbursement at the IRS rate is provided). NHLA offers hybrid (remote/in person) work arrangements to interested staff, typically permitting up to two days per week of regularly-scheduled remote work.
Administrative Assistant
NHLA seeks a full-time Administrative Assistant. Administrative Assistants provide essential administrative support within our nonprofit law firm. This position will be primarily focused on providing administrative support to attorneys and paralegal advocates working on NHLA’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Project (DVAP).
We are particularly interested in candidates who speak another language (in addition to English) that is widely spoken in New Hampshire. We are seeking an Administrative Assistant to be based in our Concord office, with regular travel to cover other offices (primarily Manchester and Portsmouth). NHLA offers hybrid (remote/in person) work arrangements to interested staff, typically permitting up to two days per week of regularly-scheduled remote work. This position requires at least three days per week of in-person work, and will require five days per week of in-person work in some weeks.
The desired start date for this position is no later than the end of July. The application process and timeline is described here.
Internships at NHLA
Summer 2023 intern positions are filled.
Applications for academic year internships will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Applicants are encouraged to apply early for summer internships.
NHLA legal interns assist attorneys and paralegals with every level of case preparation including interviewing clients, investigating cases, taking depositions, conducting legal research and drafting pleadings. Interns are encouraged to participate in administrative hearings and second year students who meet NH student practice qualifications may represent clients in District Court proceedings.
Because NHLA hires only a small number of interns each year, interns have the opportunity to work on a wide array of cases. NHLA’s legislative efforts afford interested interns the opportunity to conduct legislative tracking and analysis on key poverty issues before the state legislature.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but students are strongly encouraged to apply early each academic year for summer positions. Students are encouraged to apply for academic year internships as well.
