NHLA receives $118,000 grant from the Endowment for Health
The Endowment for Health has awarded NHLA a two-year grant of $118,000 to support our Youth Law Project (YLP). The YLP is a collaborative effort that provides civil legal services to at-risk and court-involved children to ensure that they receive the mental health, educational and other services they need. The YLP attorney works closely with other parties to the juvenile's court case, including Public Defenders or court-appointed counsel providing representation in the CHINS (Child In Need of Services) or delinquency cases, Juvenile Parole and Probation Officers, teachers and school administrators. Much of the case work focuses on special education and school disciplinary matters such as getting juveniles with disabilities the proper identification, educational plan, and educational placement, as well as representing juveniles at suspension and expulsion hearings. A portion of the funding will help support a project evaluation conducted by the University of NH, psychiatric consultation services for YLP clients, and referrals to the Pro Bono Referral Program.
