NHLA Receives Grant from the Endowment for Health
NHLA recently received a $65,000 grant from the Endowment for Health to lead a collaborative, multi-faceted public policy effort aimed at reducing communication barriers which impede access to health care for individuals in New Hampshire who are limited English proficient (LEP) or deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). NHLA will be working with Kirsten Durzy, current chair of the Medical Interpretation Advisory Board (MIAB) Steering Committee and a public health graduate student with the University of North Carolina, as well as Southern New Hampshire AHEC and the Disabilities Rights Center in the development of the story-banking project, and will partner with the MIAB Advocacy Subcommittee for regular input and guidance as the project moves forward. Project goals and outcomes include: 1. Convening a broad group of stakeholders and keeping them apprised of the work in progress. 2. Identifying and gathering existing quantitative data on current communication access barriers to health care in NH. 3. Developing a pilot story-banking project to record first person experiences of LEP and D/HH individuals seeking health care in various health care settings in NH. 4. Educating public officials and policymakers about the many challenges faced by LEP and D/HH individuals who face communication barriers to health care. 5. Developing a strategic action plan to implement legislative solutions to reduce existing barriers to health care for LEP and D/HH populations.
