NHLA receives grant from Tillotson Fund to expand presence in northern Coos County

The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation recently awarded New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) a $45,000 grant to create the Co?ounty Legal Access Project. New Hampshire Legal Assistance was one of eighteen organizations to receive support from the Tillotson Fund. The NHLA Co?ounty Legal Access Project is a program to improve and expand the delivery of legal services to residents living in the northernmost areas of Co?ounty. The project will enable NHLA to hire a part-time paralegal position who would work in both Colebrook and Berlin. NHLA will also broaden its overall outreach efforts in the Colebrook area to ensure that those potentially eligible for our assistance are familiar with our organization and the services we provide. The financial support received from the Tillotson Fund will enable NHLA to increase staffing in its Berlin satellite office and enable a paralegal to meet with clients in Colebrook. The law firm Waystack and King will allow NHLA to use its office space in Colebrook to enable NHLA to offer limited office hours there. NHLA?s enhanced capacity to serve low-income and elderly residents in Co?ounty will result in an increased number of people receiving stable income, housing, health insurance and other basic services. ?This grant will enable us to fill a significant unmet need for low-income and elderly people in Coos County,? said John Tobin, Executive Director of New Hampshire Legal Assistance. ?We are extremely grateful to the Tillotson Fund for enabling us to enhance our capacity to serve people in the Berlin and Colebrook areas. We are also grateful to Waystack and King for their generosity in allowing us to utilize their office space in Colebrook? New Hampshire Legal Assistance, a private non-profit law firm, has been representing low-income and elderly people for more than three decades in a variety of civil cases involving, housing, health care, government benefits, domestic violence, utility shut-off and nursing home problems. Over the years, New Hampshire Legal Assistance has undertaken thousands of cases and worked to protect low-income families and the elderly in the legislature, and in a number of other forums. NHLA also has a long-standing history of serving the North Country and has maintained an office in Berlin for over 35 years. The Neil and Louis Tillotson Fund, an advised fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, is a special grant program to benefit the North Country. The fund is expected to award a total of $3 million to nonprofits and community groups by June 2007. The Neil and Louis Tillotson Fund was established with the philosophy and principles of Neil Tillotson in mind: Be humble, be creative and be kind. Any low-income or elderly North Country resident who is in need of legal assistance should contact NHLA?s Littleton office at 444-8000 or 1-800-548-1886.
